08:00 PM / 12:00 AM Colonial Theatre Music
Kick off ArtWalk weekend right! Join the folks at Colonial Theatre for a live performance by Banda Magda
Led by Greek-born composer, orchestrator, singer and accordionist Magda Giannikou (Kronos Quartet, Louis CK), Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Drawing on the band’s global background (Greece, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, USA), the group combines South American rhythms with jazz improvisation, cinematic arranging, sophisticated audience participation, mid-century classics and world “chansons” sung in 6 languages.
Founded in 2010 in New York, Banda Magda has toured in more than 22 countries and 5 continents. This group of close musical friends turn Giannikou’s songs into engaging romps that have won them a spot with Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner Vol.1 as well as performances at discerning venues and festivals such as WOMAD, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, L’Olympia, Jazz à Vienne, Canarias Jazz, Apollo Hammersmith, The Kennedy Center, Kathmandu Jazz Festival and many more. After their debut album “Amour, t’es là?” and sophomore “Yerakina”, Banda Magda is producing their 3rd opus, the vibrant, Technicolor “Tigre” to be released in 2017.
After the success of their brilliantly colorful debut album, Amour, t’es là? (Top 10 Billboard World Music Charts, NPR’s All Songs Considered, First Listen, NPR’s 10 favorite World Music Albums 2013), the Banda came back with Yerakina. The album, co-produced by GRAMMY Award-winners Michael League (Snarky Puppy) and Fab Dupont (Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Bebel Gilberto), shows the next step in the Banda’s devotion to their craft and their sound, featuring Technicolor folk songs and pop chestnuts played with dynamic finesse.

Soul expression, emotional exchange, connection, rhythm and harmony. These represent but a few of the characteristics of Ana’s music. She strives to keep her sound fresh and evolving. She draws inspiration from life experiences, her imagination, and a myriad of different music genres to create her unique sound. Ana writes all of her own music which gives her sound its unique flavor. Connection with her audience is a critical component and consideration during the songwriting process. She lives to create and connect with others through her music.
Ana D’Leon is a self-taught musician from Vermont who started playing guitar at the tender age of 13. Ana began writing songs long before she picked up the guitar. As a child, Ana learned the foundations of music on trumpet and listened to a diverse mix of music when she was growing up. Because Ana’s father is from the Dominican Republic, she grew up listening to Merengue, Bachata, Julio Iglesias, and even Tom Jones. Ana’s mother, a seventh generation Vermonter, loved Meatloaf, Genesis, John Denver, Cindy Lauper and many others. Ana says she was privileged to have grown up next to a Classic Rock lover.
Ana says her music is created in cooperation with a force much larger than herself. She draws from her life experiences and diverse musical background to create what you hear today. She is always learning and enjoys connecting with her listeners.
For Ana, the shared experience is what it is all about. The silent transfer of emotion. There is something sacred in that.
